INFORMATION FOR AUTHORS

We encourage professionals and graduate students in psychology who are members of APA Division 35 Section 4 to submit short articles for the 2021 Summer issue of Perspectives. The following are general guidelines to help you prepare and forward your submission.

1. Topic Selection

Our readership is composed primarily of psychologists, graduate students in psychology and other mental health professionals who are members of the Section on Gender and Sexual Orientation Diversity of the Society for the Psychology of Women (APA Division 35). We are interested in articles that address issues concerning LGBTQ individuals and communities. Select a topic that has relevance for working with, teaching about, or researching gender and sexual orientation diversity.

2. Writing Style

Newsletter articles are geared towards casual readers. Unlike papers published in peer-reviewed journals, newsletter articles should be informational and engaging, light on the use of references, attention-grabbing, and end with a clear "bottom-line" message or "call to action." Keep your article focused. To give you an idea of what we are looking for, for each 300 to 500 words, authors should articulate no more than 3-5 main points to support their opening statement, and end with a closing thought that brings all points together. Most articles we publish are 800 to 1200 words long, but we consider shorter and longer submissions that can be of interest to our readers.

Book reviews should include a description of the book and its purpose, followed by an unbiased opinion regarding its scholarship, relevance in the field, and/or usefulness to its target audience (i.e., researchers, practitioners, instructors, and/or general public). A discussion about strengths and limitations should also be included. Like most articles we publish, the ideal length of review columns is 800 to 1200 words, but we consider shorter and longer submissions about books that can be of interest to our readers.

3. Preparing Your Submission

Articles should be written in APA style (click here for a tutorial), carefully proofread and saved in a Word file. If you are a graduate student and this is the first time you are submitting an article for publication, consider asking your faculty advisor/mentor to review your article and give you feedback, or to be a co-author.

4. Submitting Your Article

E-mail your article to the editor at tebbe@wisc.edu. Please include the following information with your submission:
  • A title for your submission
  • A high resolution photo of yourself, portrait style (this photo will be published with your article)
  • Information about yourself, including your highest degree, current title and work/school affiliation. See example: Elliot A. Tebbe, PhD, Assistant Professor, School of Nursing, University of Wisconsin-Madison
